Half of the world’s habitable land is used for agriculture, with most of this used to raise animals for dairy and meat. Plant-based diets can help! How? The land needed to feed animals who will be eaten by humans – including land for grazing and to grow crops for animal feed – is far greater than the land needed to grow food for humans directly.
In fact, Our World in Data found that if the world adopted a plant-based diet, we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectares! Plant-based diets also reduce the need for monoculture crops, which are harmful to soil health, as the demand for animal feed is a driving factor in their use.
