Day 8: Try some vegan treats today!

Life can be sweet! Try a plant-based chocolate bar, cupcake or ice cream. You can bake yourself, or buy from a shop. Discover how delicious vegan treats can be.

If baking yourself, consider subbing a mix of 50/50 oil and applesauce for the fat (for example the butter or oil) in your favourite cake, muffin or quick bread recipe or consider some vegan baking alternatives like flax seed eggs.

There are SO many delicious plant-based eateries out there! Treat yourself to a meal! You can go for some vegan comfort food or a healthy salad or bowl.

Search the map to find plant-based businesses near you, including: restaurants, dessert businesses, food and beverage shops, textile products, beauty products, and cleaning products and services.

A great app for finding plant-based restaurants in different communities is Happy Cow. You can search your location for fully vegan, vegetarian or restaurants with plant-based options. Visit the website below.

Day 2: Aim to get half your plate from fruits and veggies today.

Canada’s food guide encourages us to get half of our plates from fruits and veggies. You can do this by starting with a salad or a soup, putting raw veggies and dip at the centre of the table, doubling the veggies in the recipe or having fruit for dessert or stocking up on frozen fruit so you always have some to throw in a smoothie.

Similarly, Virginia Messina (MPH, RD), and Jack Norris (RD) developed a plate guide very similar to Canada’s Food Guide specifically for a plant-based diet, that also recommends half of our plates be fruit and vegetables.
